What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

Air source heat pumps are a form of renewable technology which takes warmth from the air outside and uses it to heat your home or commercial property. They are suitable for a wide range of properties. They do not take up a lot of space, but they must be positioned somewhere outside with sufficient air flow.

There are two types of air source heat pump – air-to-water systems or air-to-air systems. Here are the main differences between the two:

Air-to-water – These heat water which is circulated around the home via radiators. They can also heat water in a storage tank.

Air-to-air – These use fans to circulate warm air around the home and they cannot heat water.

An air source heat pumps works by having a liquid refrigerant pumped between two heat exchangers. The liquid absorbs heat energy from the outside (even when temperatures are low) and warms it up by passing it through a compressor. It then transfers the higher temperature heat to the heating/hot water circuits of the home.

Why choose an Air Source Heat Pump to replace your traditional oil or gas boiler?

Unlike gas and oil boiler, heat pumps can deliver heat at low temperatures over longer periods. They are most suitable when replacing a boiler which is off the gas grid.

Air source heat pumps are a superior replacement for oil boilers as they remove the unpleasant smell that you may notice if you currently use an oil boiler. Or, if your gas boiler is coming to the end of its life, an air source heat pump is the perfect, energy saving solution. Benefit your home and the environment by using a renewable source of energy to heat your property.

What are the Benefits of an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • Lower your carbon footprint – Using an air source heat pump will lower your carbon emissions.
  • Lower fuel bills – If you are using conventional heating, it can be expensive to heat your home. Air source heat pumps provide a low-cost alternative to expensive fuel such as electricity, LPG, oil or coal. Dependent on the fuel you are currently using to heat your home, you can save up to £1,610 per year! (figures from Energy Saving Trust).
  • Requires little maintenance – Once the heat pump has been installed, the maintenance required is minimal. They are very reliable and operate fine for 20+ years.
  • Renewable Heat Incentive – This is a UK Government scheme which provides financial incentives for householders who use renewable heat technologies. You will be eligible for payments of between £1,341 and £1,586 per year.

The Renewable Heat Incentive

The government-backed Renewable Heat Incentive is a financial incentive to promote and encourage the use and uptake of renewable heat technologies. If you are eligible for the incentive you will receive payments over a period of seven years for the amount of clean, green renewable heat your technology produces. For more information on the incentive please contact the Southern Energy Solutions team.
